You'd understand this better than I, but I expect this is because our Jewish kids are all brain-washed during their youth. They are then resistant to contrary information and opinions that might cause them to adjust their thinking. It's terribly sad.

We grow up in very isolated environments, I don't think most Canadian Jews have even met a single Palestinian in their entire life, despite them living beside us in large numbers here in our cities.

This Globe Op-Ed is a perfect example. The writer, who I once knew and liked, is an unabashed Zionist and Nakba-denier. He suggests that Canada and Israel “share core values” which I find repugnant. But he was taught all of this as a child.

I should have added that I never categorize friends and acquaintances by religion. Nobody is genetically a jew or a catholic or a muslim or a buddhist . People often self-describe themselves as such, but they are really just demonstrating that they subscribe to a list of beliefs. You share some religious beliefs with others that claim to share similar beliefs and are committing genocide. Their beliefs and your beliefs are clearly not identical, and their behaviour sickens you (as it should). It does not reflect on you, though, and you in no way share responsibility for such heinous barbarism.

Writing this column comes from a horrible position, where on the one hand I understand that it can cause problems for Jews to castigate our community at large to the gentile public, and on the other hand I feel a moral responsibility to say "no this is fucking crazy I'm not associating myself with this"

I have tried to assert that Judaism is a religion only and have been asked to leave antizionist groups for this assertion. The multitude of atheists in these groups feel that to define Judaism as a religion is to deny their identity. Zionist groups of course essentialize their racial claims. So while I agree with you, we cannot deny we are in the small minority who feel that way.

Thank you for writing this. It is horrible but we must accept that the consensus (even supermajority) position within our religion is in favor of the desolation of Gaza and subjugation of the rest of Palestine.
