What is to be done with traitors like Adam Vaughan?
How do we discourage this kind of treason?
In 2019, Liberal Member of Parliament for Spadina—Fort York Adam Vaughan spoke forcefully in the House of Commons against Doug Ford’s plan to bulldoze Ontario Place. His exact words are right there, carved in stone in Hansard for everyone to see.
Indeed, between both his time as a Toronto City Councillor and as a Liberal Member of Parliament, Adam Vaughan has been extremely vocal in his distaste for the Ford brothers, both Premier Doug Ford and the late former mayor Rob Ford.
Adam Vaughan explicitly participated in the initial opposition to the plans to privatize Ontario Place. It is a matter of public record, and he has contributed plenty of his personal thoughts to the public record.
But today, something changed! Therme Canada announced they’re going to give him money!
Yes, Adam Vaughan has decided to betray the people of Toronto, specifically the very same ward and riding that elected him, because Therme Canada wants to give him money. What do principles matter to Adam when he could make a shitload of money?
Mind you, Adam Vaughan has willingly done this after the New York Times broke the story that Therme misrepresented themselves in the pitch to the Ontario Government as a different company, also called Therme, with a suspiciously similar logo.
Indeed, Ontario’s Auditor General confirmed that Therme Group did not own and operate five out of the six spas they cited in their bid to the Ford Government. It is now well-established as fact that Therme’s 95-year lease over Ontario Place was acquired under blatantly false pretences…which in normal human speak, we call a lie.
Adam Vaughan disregarded all of this in today’s interview with the CBC about his new role as a Therme Canada spokesperson. He insists, despite the evidence of his own words, that Therme is amazing and splendid and wonderful and that his support is proof that it’s the best thing since sliced bread!
You know what, Adam? I’m sure the paycheques you get from Therme are very wonderful indeed! I sure wonder exactly what that dollar figure is, Adam! Would you like to share with the class?
Truthfully, Therme is very explicit in what they are doing here. Getting a former critic to blatantly do a 180-degree turn on their previous public statements is a power move. It is a show of force from Therme, a display that people can be bought and silenced, intended to demoralize and dispirit you as their opposition.
So to those of you who do oppose Therme’s plan to steal Ontario Place, I recommend you figure out a plan to do something. Do anything, really, because as we speak Therme’s theft of Toronto’s land goes unanswered.
Look beyond social media, to the world outside your window. Despite vocal criticism over this plan, Doug Ford has won a third straight majority, and the construction crews have completely destroyed Ontario Place and levelled it to the ground. What has the opposition materially done to stop this? Nothing!
Adam Vaughan is a traitor, but if you expect him to feel shame about it, you are a fool. Currently, to retire from politics and immediately sell out your community means lucrative financial reward. Adam Vaughan is eating well after this treasonous act. He will enjoy many creature comforts, at our expense.
So we must ask ourselves, what is to be done with traitors? Quite plainly, the scales must be tipped, to ensure that no matter the monetary profit, treason comes at an extreme and painful cost. Because as long as betrayal pays well, so-called “leaders” will continue to sell us out for thirty silver coins.
Adam Vaughan has chosen to side against the people, and now he must face the consequences of his decision. He must be made to realize the full cost of this betrayal. But as to how the people of Toronto should act to rebalance the scale?
